The Situation: What's Happening

AS Saint-Étienne is going through a particularly delicate period, marked by chronic sporting and managerial instability. Eirik Horneland's arrival at the helm of the team, initially perceived as a promising solution, quickly turned into a bitter failure. According to Bernard Caïazzo, former chairman of the club's supervisory board, this fiasco was actually anticipated at the highest level, notably by Kilmer Sports, the club's American owner.

In his book Temps additionnel (Added Time), Caïazzo provides a critical assessment of the club's recent management, highlighting a lack of preparation and an unfamiliarity with the specific context of Ligue 1. The Horneland failure is therefore not a surprise but the result of a series of questionable decisions validated from the outset by the American management.

Why is this happening?

The first key factor is the unfamiliarity with Horneland's profile and his suitability for the club. Kilmer, as owner, had all the necessary information about the Norwegian coach, including his past and methodology, but chose to disregard the warning signs. This decision reveals a significant disconnect between the sporting strategy and the reality on the field.

Furthermore, the absence of a clear medium-term vision contributed to the failure. ASSE experienced a transitional period where tactical choices and recruitments lacked coherence, which weakened Horneland from his arrival. The sporting project did not seem aligned with the demands of Ligue 1, a demanding and competitive league where every detail counts.
